Background updating AWOL in Leopard?
Well, it looks as if Apple have found a way to avoid the prebinding problem previousy discussed. Unfortunately it's not what I'd call elegant.
According to leaked screenshots at ThinkSecret a much loved feature of OS X is going away. When Software Update is run, it's like the bad old days of single tasking OS's, everything must be quit. I really hope this is only a temporary 'feature' as it looks to be a worse solution to software updates in terms of usability than that in any modern OS I can think of, including Windows XP and Vista.

I once ran software update, on an OS update, with lots of apps open, and it failed. Shut down my computer, it wouldn't start up again. I had to reinstall OS X. I wouldn't call this "feature" a bad thing. Although it should only be for updates that need a restart.
I see your point, but the problem is apparently a bug related to updating prebinding, not the ability to download and install updates in the background per-se. The real solution would be to fix this bug not implement a brute-force workaround.
If this change does appear in the final code of 10.5 and if it is for all runs of Software Update it's a massive step backwards IMHO. Even Windows allows you to at least download updates in the background and many *nixes allow you to modify just about everything bar the kernel itself while the system is running. What about those on slower connections or when huge updates are released, are we expected to stop everything we are doing and leave our computers inactive? If anything this will put people off running important security updates and so on.
The prebinding bug has fried my computer twice now, and if this is the step Apple are going to take to fix the problem, they've just lost a Mac OS X user -- I'll go back to Debian GNU/Linux and enjoy being able to do what I damn well please with my computer, not what Apple tell me to do with it. With the powerful BSD underbelly of OS X, I'd figure Apple would have found a better way to handle bugs than the ham-fisted approach they're possibly taking in fixing this problem.
